Getting Personal . . . And FINALLY Doing What You’ve Told Me To Do

So, on most weeks, I send out helpful fitness advice for you and your family.

Well . . . today is a bit different.

I want to pull back the curtain a little bit and share something more personal.

Here goes.

My wife Bethany and I were recently out for a (rare) weekend away from our three kids, celebrating with our friends in Missouri wine country.  At one of the stops along the wine trail, one of the hosts went around our table (a women we just met was celebrating a birthday) and asked each of us, “Do you like your birthday?” (Most of them did, if you are wondering).

Bethany and Me On the Wine Trail

I smiled at the question. This group of friends didn’t know (yet) about the strong feelings I have about my birthday! This got me thinking about how I should share some of this with you. You will see why as you read further.

All my closest friends know that I think of my birthday (July 16th) as my own personal New Year. I always celebrate my birthday….even if I don’t like how fast life is going and how quickly I am getting older.

I think of it as a time of letting go, changing and expansion. I think about my past year and what I want to change, do and accomplish in my new year…personally and professionally. My friends laugh with me and at me, they celebrate with me and they may not always admit it . . . but I think I get them to think about their “New Year” also.

Here are just a few examples of past years for me. I’ve made goals for . . .

  • Riding my first Century (100 miles on a bike in a single ride)
  • Spending at least 15 minutes of totally un-distracted time with Bethany each day
  • Trying a new sport (I added racquetball to the list of sports I like) or hobby (I tried guitar and greatly disappointed my inner rock star)
  • Giving up artificial sweeteners
  • Working less (this seems to find its way in every year)
  • Keeping a regular date night
  • Praying daily
  • Becoming a debt-free family (aside from our mortgage)
  • Setting aside a little “date time” for each of our three kids each week
  • Worrying less about things I can’t control
  • Keeping the inside of my car cleaner
  • Creating a new fitness resource for busy couples
  • Writing another book
  • Places to travel with my family…

. . . and the list goes on.

Some big goals and some small, but all with the intention of creating something new. Changing it up so to speak.

Anyway, even though this year wasn’t a “big number” year, it felt hugely different.

I’ve found myself having BIG paradigm shifts in my life and the way I look at my business. And I don’t think it’s a midlife crisis (at least I hope not since I shouldn’t be quite there yet).

Maybe it’s having 3 small children who are learning new things each day…or maybe it is my stage in life…or maybe it’s the beginning of a new school year and a new season….who knows!

You may be asking, “Dustin, its 3 months into your ‘New Year’, why are you telling us this now?”

What I didn’t tell you is that I made this year about YOU!!

I’m serious.

As many of you have noticed, I am revamping the way I do business and am focusing on what YOU have told me over the years that you would like to see me offer or address.

Hence, the regular blog posts, the podcasts, the new webinar training, surveys, the focus in my email correspondence on hearing directly from you about your needs, the constantly improving Thrive90 Fitness program, new coaching services, new levels of interaction on Facebook, a new focus on Time and Motivation as topics.

There’s still much more to come! I am always interested to know what you wish for me to provide, so keep the ideas coming!

But…(the infamous “But”)…

There is one REALLY BIG request you have made that I’ve been holding back on– for YEARS, despite many of your pleadings and outcries.

I’m contemplating changing my mind and giving you what you’ve been asking for since, like, the beginning of time.

But I’m nervous because it means sharing with you more of myself and my business than I have in the past.

And I’m also going to need your help.

Anyway, that REALLY BIG request is . . . . (stay tuned until next time)

P.S. I’ll be back with more details in a couple of days. But until then, tell me in the comments where you’re headed this fall. Any goals for your personal “New Year”? Does anyone else do this nonsense?

P.P.S. Tony (my business partner here at Fit Marriage) is totally on-board and excited about this.  In fact, I’m flying out TOMORROW to California to spend some time sharing with him exactly what is on my mind here.

  1. I had a friend celebrate her birthday last month that does the same thing. She calls them birthday revolutions because she hopes they will change her life. Why bother with resolutions when you can do revolutions

    • I like that “revolutions” term, Mary. It’s really amazing how our perspective can change (usually for the better) around occasions like birthdays, the New Year, the birth of a child, etc.

      It’s Revolutionary! 🙂

  2. Now, THAT is a cliff hanger!

    • I don’t know what you mean. 🙂

      Thanks, Mike.

    • My thoughts exactly!

I’m still around, Dustin – thanks for ur thoughtful response recently. Things seem to be calming down. I’m hoping to get my computer back this week & join in with that book club for your book. Have a safe flight & a great pow-wow with Tony! Thanks for all your support! God Bless you.

      • Thanks SO much, Heather. I’m happy to hear that you received my response and that things are calming down for you.

I’d be honored to have you join in on the 15MMM book club!

And thanks for the well wishes. It’s going to be several days of planning around this “big idea” of mine, hopefully mixed in with the fun that San Diego has to offer.

        • Yeah, I can’t access the ebook until I have my data transferred to the new hard drive.

I was born @ Mercy in San Diego & lived there for a while while my dad was stationed there. I went back & visited my old house while we were in Cali for a make-shift honeymoon. There’s certainly some beautiful scenery there!

oh, even though I can’t access my Thrive90 videos right now, I’ve still been exercising & keeping up with my nutritional hanges.. I’ve continued to lose weight – I’m up to 13.6 lbs now & 10.5 inches. Thanks for getting the snowball rolling! I know I still owe you a video – will try to get that to you soon.
