Forget the Flowers & Invest In Your Marriage Through Action

This is it.  It’s the one day of the year we husbands are expected to be romantic…at least by Hallmark’s standards.

In the name of St. Valentine, we are implored to go buy a marked-up $90 set of roses for our wives.  They’ll surely appreciate it, but the effect will be lost in a few days while we settle back into our same old routines.

Here’s a better idea: why don’t you use today as the starting point for a new quest to be a better husband (or wife) by commiting to action?

  • Why not commit to using your time more effectively to serve your spouse?
  • Why not insert entirely new forms of intimacy into your marriage?
  • Why not take this moment to assess where you are and then take the first step towards improving yourself so that you can lead your household more effectively?

Start Now.  Seriously.

There are many awesome ways that you can invest in your marriage, and I encourage you to find the right action for your situation.  But I urge you to actually take action.

Today.  Right Now.  As soon as you finish this post, do something proactive.

Schedule a regular date night, set up a household budget to get your finances under control, plan an intimate encounter tonight, do the freaking dishes before your wife gets home to show you care.  Anything positive that you’d normally put off for “some other time.”

Just take the first small step towards a larger goal to break the chains of complacency and level up in your married life!

Taking Action Through Fitness

You’re reading Fit Marriage, so you know this passion for positive action has to tie back to your fitness, right? 🙂

Personally, I have found that an investment in my own health and well-being provides amazing benefit to my marriage and family life.  I encourage you to consider taking a similar action and see how your entire life improves.  This entire site and podcast are devoted to helping you get fit so that you can improve your relationships in countless ways, but let’s just highlight a few.

Key ways fitness improves your marriage

More Energy – To me, this is absolutely essential.  When I’m following a regular fitness routine and not eating like a moron, I feel so much better throughout the day.  There is no question that this makes me a better husband and father.

More Productivity – I don’t know about you, but I have more responsibilites than I can count on both hands and feet.  I am proud of these roles and choose to be a leader in many areas, starting inside my home as a passionate spouse, devoted father and spiritual leader.  It’s regular exercise that gives me the clarity of mind and reduced stress levels to do it all.

More Self-Esteem – This is SO VERY important, especially for many women who struggle with body image issues.  Clearly, getting fit actually makes our bodies transform into what we desire from a physical standpoint, which breeds confidence.  However, an often overlooked benefit of being active is that we accomplish something tangible every time we workout, and we are choosing to improve our health for the sake of our family.  That’s damned empowering.

How to Get Started

If you’ve decided that fitness is an area where you’d like to take action and invest in your marriage, you’ve certainly been reading the right post and the right site.  Yes, we do that. 🙂

The first step to getting fit and feeling great is to schedule your workouts into your busy life.  While this might seem overwhelming with all you have going on, you really only need 20-30 minutes, 4-5 times per week to see amazing results.  Yes, you can find 20 minutes per day for this by cutting back on a little T.V., spending a little less time on Facebook, being more productive in your daily tasks (see above), or just getting up a little earlier in the morning (with your newfound energy).

That’s exactly what I do, and it’s what dozens of busy couples and on-the-go parents have done using our training advice.

So, take that $90 of rose money and instead invest it in a gym membership for a couple of months.  Or maybe get the first month along with a session with a personal trainer if you don’t know where to start.

  1. I really enjoyed this post. The key really is starting. Bodies in motion stay in motion…or stay in motion better than those who never started. I know that when I exercise I have more energy for my family at the end of the day when I get home from work. I eat better when I exercise regularly because I don’t want anything to undo the good I did at my workout. This is a great reminder to me to keep tackling things one at a time and keep moving forward to being the man I am created to be.

    • You got it David. One thing I have learned over the years is to keep moving forward. Even if I have some down time this doesn’t mean I’ve completely failed, it’s just a bump in the road. Get back up and keep on moving.

      We are also showing our spouse and our kids that our fitness, health, and nutrition is a journey we are on.
