P90X for Beginners – Your Guide to Success

Whether it was via a late-night infomercial, an enthusiastic friend who completed the program and had to share, or my own updates on the Fit Marriage Facebook page, there’s a good chance you’ve heard of the phenomenon known as P90X.  If not, you can get all the details over at our new Team Fit Marriage Beachbody site.

As the best-selling home fitness program in history, P90X holds wide esteem as an exercise and nutrition system that gets results quickly and effectively.  There are literally thousands of success story videos on YouTube, and if you ask around, I’d be willing to bet you know someone who used P90X with some degree of success.

But it’s that degree of success that’s really important.  Personally, I recently began my third round of P90X.  I already know this is going to be my best experience yet, and I want to share with you how you can find success with P90X for your own fitness goals.

The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

My first experience with P90X was around two years ago as I approached my 30th birthday.  I was slightly overweight but pretty active that spring, and I really wanted to take it to the next level to “celebrate” the milestone of turning 30.

After I ordered the program, I immediately took the Fit Test and realized that I just wasn’t ready to complete it yet.  Unfortunately, I did not do a good job of documenting my experiences back then so I can’t share specifics, but I do recall that (despite feeling like I was in pretty good shape) I didn’t meet the minimum criteria in hardly any of the fitness test areas.

Bummer.  However, I had a good base fitness level and I was determined to have my own before/after success story.  So, I took several weeks to train, mixing in partial P90X workouts with a lot of cycling.  I took the Fit Test several weeks later with better results.  I still didn’t meet the minimums in every category, but I went ahead anyway.

My results with that first round of P90X were fantastic! I completed 11 of the 12 weeks before I turned my attention to cycling in preparation for my birthday.  On my 30th birthday, I rode my first Century (100 miles) in intense heat and was in the best shape of my life thanks to P90X.

Unfortunately, I let my fitness slide through the fall and winter.  When spring 2010 arrived, I wanted to relive my previous achievements.  With a round of P90X under my belt, I decided to just  jump right in…BIG mistake!

After a few weeks, I felt terrible, overtrained and completely devoid of motivation.  The good news is this is when I met Tony, and my struggles inspired us to create Fit Marriage and the Thrive90 Fitness program.  That was a great side benefit, but it was clear that my fitness was ugly and made worse by my poor approach to P90X this time around.

Preparation Makes All the Difference!

P90X emphasizes that it’s an EXTREME fitness program, and that’s no joke!

If you have been fairly sedentary and you are carrying extra weight around, I would not suggest jumping straight into the full program.  You’ll likely end up overwhelmed, overtrained or even injured.

I highly recommend P90X to get you fantastic results in all areas of your fitness, quickly and effectively.  It’s an awesome program, and it’s what we recommend as the “next step” for our Thrive90 Fitness graduates.

However, I feel strongly that you need to ensure that your body, mind and schedule are ready to take it on for a 90-day period.  I’ve tried it both ways, and there’s no denying that a bit of preparation goes a long, long way.

Introducing the 30-Day Prelude to P90X

I wanted to thank you again for the Prelude to P90X. It made a huge difference. I’m just finishing up the recovery week of the first session, and my body is in the best physical shape it has ever been in already. This is a 30-day training plan that adapts the actual P90X DVD workouts, allowing you to start slow and build up to the point that you are ready to Bring It with the full program just 30 days later.  In fact, the first week requires no DVDs at all, so you can order P90X, get started while you wait on it to ship to your home and then hit the second week in stride as we introduce the first DVD-based workouts.

This is what I’ve been doing personally over the last month, and my first several full P90X workouts have been amazing.  This is by far my best start yet, and I have more energy and enthusiasm than ever before.  During the Prelude, I never worked out for more than 30 minutes, yet my initial full-length P90X routines (usually almost an hour in length) went great.

And the best part?  During the Prelude period of 30 days, I lost about 10 pounds and 2 inches off my waist…before I even started the full P90X program!

  1. My husband was given the P90X program from a friend and I had no idea you were connected to it when I approached him about Thrive90. I just happened to see it on the site and made the connection sometime last week. I just asked him about it again and he said there was no way he was in the kind of shape necessary to do the P90X. And, as you know I’m only just beginning Week Three of the Thrive90 program (lost 3.6 pounds! and my husband says he can see a difference already). So, I guess we’re not even ready for the Prelude, but I want to continue after my 90 days are complete so I may just see if I can join the webinar on Wednesday. Thanks for all the support!

    • That’s awesome, Heather! You’re totally right in that if someone is really not close to being ready for P90X, then we recommend Thrive90 as their preparation. For those that are in moderate shape, we can get them them ready to go in 30 days. However, for those that need great preparation, Thrive90 is an excellent build-up program. I think you’ll get a lot out of the Prelude webinar just so you’re ready for the future. 🙂

    If you order the Thrive90 in digital format, can the workouts be downloaded and saved to a DVD for use when traveling with no internet access?

    If you order the DVD set, how do you get updates in the future since you don’t have the digital access for life?

    • Hi Lee,

      I’ll email you as well, but I thought I’d leave a response here for everyone’s benefit.

      The digital Thrive90 workouts CAN be downloaded. They are in .mov format, which will play well on your computer, but this format cannot directly be burned to a DVD and then played back in a DVD player. So, you can download them to your computer (we recommend you do anyhow) and play them back anytime on your computer with no internet needed – but not on a DVD player.

      If you order the DVD set, you ALSO get full access to the digital version. So, you’ll have access to all updates we make inside the membership site as well as all the bonus materials there…for life!

    I have been trying to sigh up for your prelude to p90x but the beachbody site is only for US and Canada. I’m in Australia. I’ve found the Aust site for beachbody but there is no connection to you guys or your programs. Can you please advise?
