By having your vegies several times a day can give you the energy to keep you going. Plus all the antioxidants and vitamins they provide. Having the inspiration to eat the healthy foods will be able to keep you on track. When I am discouraged to I go to see about getting a non food item as a treat to myself.

Hi Lee,

I'll email you as well, but I thought I'd leave a response here for everyone's benefit.

The digital Thrive90 workouts CAN be downloaded. They are in .mov format, which will play well on your computer, but this format cannot directly be burned to a DVD and then played back in a DVD player. So, you can download them to your computer (we recommend you do anyhow) and play them back anytime on your computer with no internet needed - but not on a DVD player.

If you order the DVD set, you ALSO get full access to the digital version. So, you'll have access to all updates we make inside the membership site as well as all the bonus materials there...for life!

I hope that answers your questions, and we look forward to hearing about your success with Thrive90 Fitness!

If you order the Thrive90 in digital format, can the workouts be downloaded and saved to a DVD for use when traveling with no internet access?

If you order the DVD set, how do you get updates in the future since you don't have the digital access for life?

My husband and I are racing in our first triathlon together this Saturday. We had a practice 5K a few weeks ago and discovered we'd need to be pretty intentional about working as a team this weekend! My husband is much faster than I am, but he's agreed to serve me and go my pace (SLOW!) I am so looking forward to accomplishing this milestone together!

Hey Ramsey,

Thanks for sharing your story. What you're facing is really very common - we often are in a different place in our fitness level and our ambitions that our spouse/significant other. I know you have the added complexity of a competitive fiance, but you are blessed to have someone who does want to share your active lifestyle.

I would suggest that you two plan to run together only on the days when you want to run shorter, more recreational runs. On other days, you can workout separately and/or do something that she really enjoys (especially if it's something she can beat you at :) ).

If you talk openly about it and get all the emotions out on the table, it should go a long way toward setting the right expectations and get your training time back to being enjoyable for both of you.

I hope that helps, and let us know how that 20K goes!

Thank you for the gluten free chocolate chip cookie recipe. I don't have any allergies, but my wife and kids are celiac, cant eat eggs, or milk products, so this works perfectly. Again thank you, now I get to try making them as a surprise !

Hi there. Its nice to hear about your great experience. My fiancee and I are planning on running a 20km race together in a few months and we have begun training. Its our first race, and 20km is further than I have ever run in my life. The training was going really well at first. We started off running 2km together, then got to 4km, then managed to do a 6 km run and finally got all the way up to 9km. It was at that point that my body started adjusting and improving, and my fiancees body started punishing her.

This morning our goal was to make it 10km. I was pumped. She was dreading it. From the onset, she got a cramp in her side which put her in a really nasty mood. Let me add right here that she is extremely competitive. Anything I do, she wants to do. She is constantly judging herself against me. So the fact that I did not have side cramps jus upset her more. at about 4km she was really suffering, but wouldn't stop. Meanwhile, I was all happy and bouncing and was really looking forward to the next 6 km. I told her if she wanted to stop it was fine, but she would have none of it. I ended up forcing us to stop at 8.5km and told her that I had a cramp too (not true...).

For me, running has become something that I look forward to. It dramatically reduces my anxiety during the day, increases my workload capacity while at work, and just puts me in a good mood. Today's experience just made me feel really guilty and bad, and then resentful that I couldn't do what I wanted to do because of her. On the flip side, she felt awful because I wasn't having a hard time like she was, and she started hating herself. What a disaster! The same thing happened 2 days ago when we were doing a short run (4km), but less exaggerated because it was a shorter distance.

Really, everything had been going so well until these past 2 runs.

I tried encouraging her afterwards, but she was just in a total funk. Anyone have an experience like this?? I had never been a runner in my life before starting this training, and I am really learning to love it. But I also love my fiancee and want this to be a joint experience.

Any thoughts?

The corner pull up bars are cool. I didn't have any corners in my garage to use as I only have one that could be used and there are cabinets there.

There is no way I could do a muscle up on this bar due to the boards overhead. The only way that I could would have been to make the vertical pipe longer so that I would have room. Problem with this is that I don't like to bend my knees when doing my pull ups.

Good luck getting yours together. It took me some time to figure out the best option for my setup.

Cheers.

Thanks for the reply. That helps to clarify. I watched several videos on youtube and I may end up trying a corner option but I'm not sure if I'll have enough room.

Are you able to do a muscle up on that bar?

Hey Language Tutor,

The way that I have made this sturdy is that I have (6) 3" screws on the flat boards to keep it in place. I have not had any issues with the pull up bar moving at all. My daughter is on it almost everyday and doing all sorts of moves on it.

You are correct on how to mount the pull up bar because of the wall flanges that I use for this one. If you have an open ceiling I would buy some boards and mount it that way.

Cheers.

How sturdy is this type of pull up bar if you were to do kipping pull ups? Also it looks like it would only work if you had boards laid flat because the wall flanges are so wide I don't think they would hit the hole stud of a 2x4.

Glad you dug the article Jessica. There aren't many couples who are at the same fitness level. I love how you and your husband split your time at the gym doing your own thing and then doing part of the workout together. This is something we'll have to talk about more as it is a perfect scenario. Cheers.

What a great article! I appreciate your perspective that many partners may be at different fitness levels. Some of the best times I've had at the gym where when my husband and I worked out together. Here's another option (the way we did it): go do your own workout for half the time, then team up for the last half. In our case, he went to swim for 30 minutes, I'd do cardio. Then we got back together to lift.
Love your work! Keep it up!

I'm focusing on #1 and #4 - I always like having more energy throughout the day, which also helps me feel better. Especially now with the mid-winter slump hitting.

#6 is good too, though. :D

Thanks for sharing, Fawn. I definitely agree that the "sexiness" isn't all about us finding our spouse attractive, but it's more about them feeling great about their own body.

Thanks!

I really like Zen Habits, and I have worked together with Mark putting together a health fair...Mark is GREAT. I don't know if I like Tim Ferris' approach to "hacking" fitness however. I just think a lot of the stuff he does isn't healthy in the long run and cuts a lot of corners....just my $.02

Hi Brett, this is great information. Too many people think getting fit requires a monthly membership or an expensive machine, but the only thing really necessary is commitment. Just being intentional about what you eat makes a huge difference for people, and finding an activity they enjoy is another key.

Great question Troy. No, I would say do the entire workout 2 times per week. I do like your idea of one round each day for 12 days too. That would be perfect on Christmas day with 1 rep of 3 exercises before the festivities begin. ; )

So do the same for each of the 12 days?

With the holidays coming I could be convinced to do descending ladder one round per day. That way on Christmas I'd only have a single round to do of one rep each - chillin' on Christmas. ;)

Paige,

This is fantastic! Thanks so much for sharing your new venture into tracking.

I was actually motivated by Matthew's post as well, and I now carry a Moleskine notebook with me and track several activities that I want to work on. After a week, I can say it's been very effective.

Keep it up!

This is a great idea! About three weeks ago I started something like this where I put 3 habits that I wanted to develop across the top of a piece of paper. I put the date each day down the left side. I put this on my refrigerator. At the end of each day I checked off whether or not I did each item. Some things I was very consistent about and others, not so much. Without this paper staring me in the face every day, I wouldn't be able to remember how consistent I was or wasn't. They say that it takes 21 days to make a habit so I'm tracking my results by month.

No Clare, we're not at all implying that eating spinach alone is a good idea. Spinach and other leafy greens should be included as part of a balanced, healthy diet...along with those lean proteins and fats that you mentioned. This will give you the energy for great sex and to enjoy everything else in life.

Are you implying that we can survive on just spinach? I think I would be too hungry to even contemplate sex unless I have a good supply of meat and fat as well! However, trusting in your argument, I'll give it a go.

About a two years ago, my husband and I did the Biggest Loser workout DVDs for several months as well as got on a healthy diet. It was awesome to do it together, and it worked well to have the accountability and companionship! He lost weight and hit his goal weight in almost no time, but since I'm female and the weight comes off slower for most women, I did not reach my goal. For whatever reason, we fell off the bandwagon. I am thankful that we have kept off probably 80% of what we lost, but the motivation to get back on it is lacking mostly due to the boringness of the repetitive workouts, even though we know they work. I would love to do Zumba but can't due to lack of finances, and my husband is unlikely to be interested in a dance workout! A happy medium would be wonderful! We use Emealz for healthy, easy meal planning and love it, but we definitely could use some help with the workout aspect!
Thanks, Dustin!

Laura

P.S. I'm new to your blogs, and I have to say I love what you have to say about finances (we <3 Dave Ramsey), Natural Family Planning (so rare to find advocates, especially male, so go you!), and just all of the topics I've seen so far. Good work!

When a spouse doesn’t like greens it can be frustrating for the other. Having been there myself at times in my marriage I can relate to where you might be. One suggestion I do have is that you can try a supplement called VitaMineral Greens, http://www.fitmarriage.com/VMG. You could try mixing this product in with a sauce to see how it would taste. Might be a way to get some super greens in.

As for this post being the only key to a happy marriage that isn’t possible. As married folks we need to be engaging our spouses in all six forms of intimacy. Is it easy, heck no! Been married 15 years now and it will always take effort on both of our parts.

Cheers.

As easy as this sounds it's not always as easy as opening up a can of spinach and "tip it up." My husband doesn't exactly like anything grean....or fresh.....if its not meat pasta or from a box he's not eating it! Is there such thing as spinach in a pill? Now that I think about it I'm sure there is but is it as effective? If only this article were the only key to a happy marriage!

I have 4 kids and not a lot of free time. I try to workout every morning but the late nights with my 1 yr. old make it difficult. My wife can sometimes squeeze in a lunch workout but not consistently unless everything is taken care of around the house (good luck with that).

The 2 biggest gaps I see are :
-there are no fun workouts with my wife
-i don't have any good workouts i can incorporate the kids into

Christina,

I totally hear you on the high cost of eating healthy. There are some great ways to make this more affordable, and of course when you weigh the cost of being UNhealthy, it really becomes a no-brainer. Please make sure you sign up for the interest list so we can tackle this together and get you on the right path.

Thanks!

Thanks so much for sharing your struggles, Spring. I love that you have a desire to get your entire family moving and see the benefits of making it happen. As you've experienced, it's not easy to get there, but I know we will help you get where you want you want to be...for you and your family.

Keep in touch, and let's make sure your hubby is around for a very long time!

My biggest struggle is the price difference between high fat food and the "good for you" choices. I need help eating healthy on an EXTREMELY tight budget.

My husband has 40 hour office job, plus a one-hour (twice a day) commute. He has a short time in the evening with the kids before they go to bed, and then we crash onto the couch ourselves! He tries to get out and walk on his lunch break when he can, and is actually changing to a standing work-station to avoid so many hours of sitting, but of course it's not enough! While I can sometimes work in a morning work out, it is not consistent. I would love to find a way to get us ALL moving more. My kids are not into sports (one dances, they all do music/theater etc) so we could ALL use more physical activity in our week.. but it's hard to know where to start. Also, I am the more motivated, goal-driven person in our marriage, he is the spontaneous one. I would love to find something HE can get excited about... so it doesn't sound like I am nagging... but I want him around for a long time, and I want us to have energy to do life together for a long time. :)

Teresa,

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I can hear how important this is to you, and I am looking forward to getting our new community up and running so we can help you and so many others. It sounds like you are doing great and you've seen the benefits of being consistent. My wife did Weight Watchers for several years and, while she hasn't used it for a long time, it helped her understand portions and consistently eating smaller amounts of food - which is tough in our culture of HUGE food sizes!

It does sound like your husband is experiencing a lot of health problems that could likely be corrected with a healthier lifestyle. I hope his doctor is advising him on what to do and that he takes it to heart. This is so important as you two prepare to welcome children into your marriage.

Blessings to you, Teresa.

Hi Natalia,

I'm really excited to hear that you guys are already taking a look at your fitness at this stage in your life. This is the perfect time to form healthy habits and make fitness a regular part of your lifestyle. We often hear of the "reluctant spouse" and we'll be working to address that important issue as part of this new project as well.

Blessings!

Daniele,

I think we need to have YOU on as a time management expert! I still don't know how you manage all that you do, and the respect here is certainly mutual.

Healthy meals that the whole family will eat is at the top of our list. Thanks!
